Most of these schools are known to be privately owned and managed and have strong and different political, philosophical or scholarly orientations than regular or public schools and have emerged in the American society in the ninetieth century. One of the primary focuses of the educational methods that have been used since then are on the child’s moral, emotional, physical, psychological and spiritual aspects.

The most well known alternative school is actually the Waldorf Schools that were founded by Rudolf Steiner. The educational methods that are promulgated by these schools are mainly humanistic, based on Steiner’s educational philosophy. Another example of alternative school method is the one of Maria Montessori who was an Italian physician and educator. Along her career, she has brought many contributions to educational methods and has definitely influenced the alternative schooling technique. For example she believed that small children are sufficiently competent to make decisions and children should be encouraged to do creative things that would develop their spiritual, sensitive and psychological statuses. She also believed that children would learn and develop faster and easier in 3-year aged groups.

An alternative school have many benefits and is not used primarily for the children with special needs that do not have the capacity to attend regular courses or for children that fail regular schools from different reasons. Among the most important benefits is that these centers usually focus on the creative side of every child and the nontraditional methods and curricula helps the child to discover his own abilities and gradually make him discover himself and probably his future career or way in life.
